A man was arrested after stabbing nine people, including children, in a violent sequence of events that began Saturday night in Meerzorg, a few kilometers from the capital, Paramaribo. Among the fatal victims are the attacker's four children, as well as other relatives and neighbors who tried to intervene or were in the vicinity of the attack, according to Noticias Argentinas news agency. The attacker began his violent raid within his family circle and then continued to attack residents of the Meerzorg area. Local police managed to capture the suspect shortly after the attacks, although the motives that triggered the massacre are still unknown. The president of Suriname, Jennifer Simons, expressed her deep consternation through social media. "We face the cruel reality that there is another side to the world," the head of state said while sending condolences to survivors and relatives. The Meerzorg community remains in shock as forensic authorities work at the scene, and the detainee is expected to be questioned in the coming hours on charges of aggravated multiple homicide.
